In early 2008, the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation was looking for a solution for the thousands of students who applied for its Dell Scholars scholarship, but were not selected. These students had invested many hours in submitting a comprehensive scholarship application, and were going from application to application to apply for more financial aid. We realized there had to be a better way to help students get a better return on their time invested in completing scholarship applications.
The foundation funded and formed a working group of several scholarship providers under the National Scholarship Providers Association (NSPA) who were looking for a solution to this problem. Initially, the idea of a common scholarship application was considered. While many of our applications were similar, there were significant differences across programs based on program criteria that would be too hard to get a one common application. Instead, we decided to focus on how to streamline the application process. So rather than one common application with several additional individualized forms for additional criteria by each scholarship program, we designed a solution where students could save and reuse their application data from application to application. Thus, Scholar Snapp was born.
Technology changes quickly, so in 2014, the foundation modernized Scholar Snapp to be a cloud based solution and developed API's to make integration even easier. In addition, www.scholarsnapp.org was created so that students could view, edit, and update their data in one location.
