Usage
In the NSPA Exchange, an affiliation entity is an organization, group, or company with which individuals have direct and indirect relations. Some affiliation entities that are associated with scholarship programs include companies, professional organizations, and country clubs. Groups with employees, customers, and/or members can be considered affiliation entities.
Style Notes
A few conventions and points of style about names:
Parenthetical acronyms are typically omitted from the canonical entry. Likewise, parenthetical explanations of acronyms are not included in the canonical entry.
For example, not Carpet Madness (CM), but Carpet Madness. The acronym can be entered as a Synonym in the list metadata.
Common or widely known acronyms are often used for the canonical form (e.g., 3M, IBM, FBI, YMCA). However, the canonical entry will typically be spelled out to ensure acronyms with different meanings in different contexts are not ambiguous.
Instead, common acronyms are added to the Synonym List, as are spelled out company names.
We typically omit phrases such as “and its subsidiaries” or “and its holdings.”
Where easily findable, we prefer adding holdings as specific entries.
However, we will add the suffix to an entry in the Synonym List if the program requirements are commonly listed thusly.
We typically omit Inc., LLC, and other legal entity designations.
Obvious exceptions are when the designation is an essential part of the name (e.g., and we’re picking a ludicrous example for comic effect, “Inc.” the magazine).
We will add the suffix to an entry in the Synonym List if the program requirements are commonly listed thusly.
Schools found in this list are here because programs exist for employees or families of the school (as opposed to the various criteria around school attendance).
References
Due to the wide array of possible affiliation entities, this list is updated as specific programs are found. The Exchange also captures the indirect and direct relationships that individuals may have with these entities. For example, it can account for a scholarship program offered to a dependent (indirect relationship) of an employee (direct relationship) of ABC Company (Affiliation Entity).
